Samuel Raymond Kirschner, 84, of Washington, died Wednesday, January 12, 2011, in his residence.
He was born April 16, 1926, in Hazelkirk, a son of Samuel J. and Ruth Cowan Kirschner.
During World War II, Mr. Kirschner served in the Army, serving from September 27, 1944, until his honorable discharge on July 30, 1946, with a rank of Tech-5. He was involved in campaigns in Central Europe and Rhineland. An M-1 marksman his awards included a Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal.
Mr. Kirschner was a member of Washington Alliance Church. He enjoyed going to church and gardening and was an avid bowler.
For 20 years, he co-owned Suburban Bus Lines and for seven years worked for Xmart Trucking Co.
Mr. Kirschner loved his family very much.
On June 7, 1950, he married Marjorie Menelly, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, David R. (Sandy) Kirschner of Mt. Vernon, Pennsylvania; two brothers, William Melvin Kirschner of Nevada and Karl Kenneth Kirschner of Eighty-Four; a sister, Charlotte Naomi Olexa of Perryopolis; and a grandson, Samuel David Kirschner.
Deceased are a sister, Ruth Beatrice Warrick; and four brothers, Norman Duane, Lloyd Vernon, James Cowan and Paul Joseph Kirschner.
Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, January 17th, with Rev. James Newman officiating. Burial will follow in Independence Cemetery.
