James Hiram Day, 93, of Washington, formerly of Amwell Township, died Wednesday, March 30, 2011, in Southmont of Presbyterian Senior Care.
He was born May 5, 1917, in Washington, a son of Stephen and Sophia Eldora Day.
Mr. Day was a 1935 graduate of Trinity High School. He worked as a dairy and beef farmer all of his life, retiring in June 2007.
Mr. Day was a long-time member of Liberty United Methodist Church and Grace Brethren Church. At Liberty, he served in various administrative positions and played dart ball. He was also a member of the Chestnut Ridge Grange and AARP.
Mr. Day enjoyed farming, his family and watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow. He especially enjoyed watching his children participate in activities.
On August 4, 1939, he married Helen B. Day, who is deceased.
Surviving are four sons, Stephen (Peggy) Day, David (LuAnn) Day, Duane (Christine) Day, all of Washington, and Dr. Dennis (Rosemary) Day of Portsmouth, Ohio; two daughters, Linda (Robert) Schmoyer of Middleburg, Pennsylvania, and Barbara Day of Abingdon, Maryland; two nephews whom he and his wife raised, William (JoAnne) Bedillion of Washington and Clifford (Sarah) Bedillion of Gordonsville, Virginia; a nephew, Chuck Bedillion (brother of William and Clifford); 18 grandchildren, Mona (Shawn) Blumer, Stephen (Lori) Day, Jr., Scott (Marna) Day, Neil (Sandy) Day, Jim (Billie) Day, Clair Day, Dr. Lori Day, Alisa Day, Christopher (Adrienne) Day, Mark Day, Michael Day, Duane (Angie) Schmoyer, Brian Schmoyer, Jennifer (Jed) Picklesimer, and Kathryn, Kristen, Keri and Kacie Bedillion; and 13 great-grandchildren, Melinda Bombash, Christopher Bombash, Emily, Luke, Sam, and John Day, Stephen, Matthew and Tyler Day, Seth Day, Nichlas, Logan and Mackenzie Schmoyer.
Deceased are a grandson, David M. Day; two brothers, S. Bernard and Jonathan Day; and three sisters, Alma Ullom, Sara Hazlett and Margaret Eastman.
Friends will be received 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and Noon to 1 p.m., the hour of service, Saturday, April 2nd, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, with Rev. Lois Swestyn officiating. Burial will follow in North Ten Mile Baptist Church Cemetery.
