Dennis Carl Eklund, 72, of Washington, died Thursday, May 5, 2011, in Donnell House.
He was born November 8, 1938, in Washington, a son of the late Arnold C. “Ernie” Eklund and the late Catherine R. (Kay) Eklund.
Mr. Eklund graduated from Washington High School in 1956 and from Washington and Jefferson College in 1960. He subsequently received a Masters of Education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1967.
He was a member of the Untied States Air Force Reserves, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant and serving from 1961 through 1967.
Mr. Eklund taught at the Eighth War School in Washington and at Boyce Middle School in Upper St. Clair, but spent the vast majority of his career at Washington High School as an English teacher.
He was the choir director at Fourth Presbyterian Church in the late 1950’s and later directed the choir at the First Christian Church of Washington for 11 years.
Mr. Eklund was a member of several professional organizations throughout his career.
He is the last of his immediate family.
He is survived by several cousins and by his two close friends, Pennierae Knorp and Sara Ann McGlumphy.
