John Newton Sargent

John Newton Sargent, 76, of Washington, died unexpectedly following surgery, Sunday, May 8, 2011, in the Washington Hospital. He was born December 2, 1934, in Washington, a son of Newton I. Sargent of Washington and the late Wilma Elliot Sargent. Mr. Sargent was a 1953 graduate of Trinity High School, where he was a three-sport athlete. He was a veteran of the Army, serving from 1954 to 1957. Mr. Sargent worked as a transmission supervisor at Columbia Gas for 40 years. An avid golfer, he was a member of the gas company’s golf league as well as its bowling league. Mr. Sargent formerly coached youth sports and played adult baseball. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports in school and college. Mr. Sargent was formerly very active in Third United Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon. On September 14, 1957, he married Merle Winfield, who survives. Also surviving are a son, John (Nancy) Sargent of Washington; a daughter, Michelle Bartlett (Kevin Yocum) of Washington; seven grandchildren, Juliet, Marguerite, and Marielle Sargent, Justin and Stephanie Bartlett, and Lyndsay and Nicholas Sargent; a daughter-in-law, Janet Sargent of Washington; a niece, Becky DeRose, and two nephews, Robert and George Robertson. Deceased are a son, Steven K. Sargent; and a sister, Shirley Robertson. Friends will be received Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 12th. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
