Harold Melvin “Micky” McDowell, 88, of Washington, died on Thursday, June 30, 2011, in his daughter’s residence, following a lengthy illness.
He was born on October 19, 1922, in Washington, a son of Harry and Clare Paxton McDowell.
He attended Trinity schools.
Mr. McDowell served in the U.S. Army from December 31, 1942, until his honorable discharge as a Corporal on March 2, 1946. For his service, he was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
He had worked as a furnace operator at Molycorp for more than 43 years.
A member of American Legion Hunt-Kennedy Post 639, Claysville, and East Buffalo Presbyterian Church, he enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing.
On December 15, 1941, he married Laura Jean Sprowls, who died on February 8, 2010.
Surviving are 2 sons, William (Shirley) McDowell, of Cuyahoga Falls, OH; and Douglas (Wonda) McDowell, of Washington; a daughter, Sharon (William) Scott, of Washington; 8 grandchildren, Brent, Ryan, Michael, Wendy, Eli, Cynthia, Todd and Shelley; 16 great grandchildren, Zoe, Haley, Alyssa, Elijah, Ty, Madison, Amanda, Matthew, Frank, Chrissy, Joe, Zach, Luke, Mason, Ethan and Sydney; and 4 great-great grandchildren, Hayden, Mara, Anabell and Ella.
Deceased, in addition to his wife and parents, are 2 brothers, Robert and Gratten McDowell.
Friends will be received on Sunday, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Ave., Washington, PA 15301, where services will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Linda Mankey officiating. Burial will follow in Claysville Cemetery.
Military rites will be accorded graveside by Hunt-Kennedy Post 639 of the American Legion.
