Carmen Calabro, 84, of Washington, died Friday, August 5, 2011, in the Donnell House, Washington.
He was born June 1, 1927, in Muse, a son of Dominic and Frances Zampaglione Calabro.
Mr. Calabro graduated from Cecil High School and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church.
On August 29, 1945, he entered the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of sergeant, and receiving the American Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory Medal. He and was honorably discharged on December 14, 1946.
Mr. Calabro was a steel worker at Jessop Steel for twenty-five years.
He volunteered at the Washington Hospital, enjoyed participating in the activities of his grandchildren, enjoyed woodworking, and was a member of the Independent Club, in Muse.
Mr. Calabro was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He was a wise man, an avid reader, and a wonderful storyteller.
On September 19, 1953, he married Joan Foglia, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Carmen (Giovanna) Calabro, Jr., of Canonsburg; two daughters, Nancy (John) Sargent, of Washington, and Susan (Jeffrey) Hirst, of Canonsburg; a brother, Frank (Janet) Calabro, of Canonsburg; a sister, Fortunata (Joseph) Compeggie, of Canonsburg; eight grandchildren, Juliet, Christine, Marguerite, Celeste, Marielle, Alexander, Celena, and Matthias; sisters in law, Alice Calabro and Myrna Calabro, both of Canonsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are two brothers, Paul and Anthony Calabro.
Friends will be received 2 to 8 p.m., Sunday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 8, 2011, in Immaculate Conception Church, 119 W. Chestnut Street, Washington, with Father William Feeney, as celebrant. Entombment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, McMurray.
