Ralph Daniel Lightner, 92, of Washington, formerly of Nineveh, died Friday, November 11, 2011, in his residence.
He was born December 30, 1918, in Nineveh, Greene County, a son of Lafayette Daniel Lightner and Blanche Elizabeth Thompson Lightner.
Mr. Lightner attended school in Nineveh. On November 20, 1944, he was inducted into the Army and served as a heavy machine gunner with Company A., 410th Engineering Construction Battalion. For his service, Mr. Lightner was awarded the World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Army of Occupation Medal (Japan). He was honorably discharged on July 29, 1946, as a private, first class.
Mr. Lightner was a truck driver for Ryder Truck Lines as well as Zappi Oil Co.
He enjoyed gardening, traveling, and spending time with family. Mr. Lightner was a member of Broad Street Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee, and Claysville American Legion
On June 21, 1941, he married Edna Mae McVicker, who died April 26, 2010.
Surviving are a daughter, Carol Elizabeth (David) Stewart of Washington.
Deceased are a brother, Timothy Francis; and five sisters, Grace Ellen Beabout, Bessie Lucinda Kiger, Helen Ruth Phillips, Mildred Lenora Rutan, and Tena Lightner, who died in infancy.
Friends will be received Sunday from Noon to 8 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, November 14, 2011, with Pastor Jay Freudenberg officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.
