John "Jack" Garrett

John Calvin “Jack” Garrett, 72, of Washington, died Thursday, December 15, 2011, in Donnell House, Washington. He was born February 21, 1939, in Washington, a son of James Henry and Mildred Rose Garrett. He graduated from Claysville High School. Jack served in the Marines for 15 years as well as in the Army National Guard of Pennsylvania for 10 years. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam. For his service, he was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal with 3 bronze stars, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with device and oak leaf cluster, Vietnam Civil Action Medal, Army Achievement Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army National Guard Achievement Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Major General T.R. White Ribbon and Major General T.J. Stewart Award. After retiring from the military, he worked as the maintenance supervisor at Westgate-Northgate Apartments. Jack was a member of VFW Post 927, American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175, the Patriot Guard Riders and American Legion Riders #639, and was a member of Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 22. He enjoyed riding his Harley, fishing and his dog, Abby. Surviving are his long-time companion, Shirley Steele; two sons, Joseph Mark Garrett and John “Jack” Garrett II; two brothers, his twin, Jim (Marlene) Garrett of Mingo Junction, Ohio, and William A. (Linda) Garrett of Washington; six grandchildren, John C. Garrett III, Joshua A., Jennifer A., Damyan C., Kiley L. and Autumn L. Garrett; and a great grandchild, Jordan A. Garrett. Deceased are a daughter, Mary Jo Garrett, and a brother, David Garrett. Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 9 a.m., Monday, December 19th. Burial will follow in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville. Military rites will be accorded graveside by Claysville American Legion 639. Memorial contributions may be made to Washington Area Humane Society, PO Box 66, Eighty-Four PA 15330.
