Charles Martin Shoemaker, 93, of Washington, died Thursday, December 22, 2011, in Center for Compassionate Care, Pittsburgh, following a one-year illness.
He was born October 5, 1918, in Homestead, a son of Oliver James Shoemaker and Edith Jane Eckert Shoemaker.
Mr. Shoemaker served in the Navy during World War II. He was discharged on October 19, 1945, with a rank of Aviation Machinist Mate, third class.
For 43 years, Mr. Shoemaker worked at Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel in the rolling mill.
He was Presbyterian and enjoyed fishing and gardening.
He was married to Frances Clair Campbell for 31 years. She died in September 1970.
His second wife, Janet Louise Hancher, died in April 2009. They were married for 40 years.
Surviving are a son, Ronald Gene (Holly) Shoemaker of Philadelphia; a daughter, Lynda J. Murphy of Perryopolis; a stepdaughter, Vivian Salisbury of Washington; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a son, Oliver James Shoemaker, and a daughter, Vicki Claire Bertalan.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, December 27, 2011, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, with Pastor Leonard Sponaugle officiating. Burial will follow in West Finley Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
