Mildred Lucille Spalla, 92, of Glendale, Arizona, formerly of Washington, died Saturday, December 24, 2011, in Banner Thunderbird Hospital, Glendale, Arizona, following a long illness.
She was born July 8, 1919, in Spring Lake Township, Tazewell County, Illinois, a daughter of Clyde Nelson Priddy and Lillian Ethel Talbot. Mrs. Spalla was a graduate of Manito (IL) Community High School and a 1941 graduate of Methodist Community Hospital, Peoria, IL, where she received her RN degree. During World War II, she served in the Army Nurses Corps with the 203rd General Hospital in Paris, France. In 1966, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from California State College. She worked as a nurse at the Washington County Health Center, Washington Hospital, and Children and Youth Services of Washington County.
Mrs. Spalla was a long-time member of Immaculate Conception Church and its Christian Mothers group, as well as a member of Business and Professional Women, DAR and Beta Sigma Phi sorority.
On June 15, 1946, in Peoria, Illinois, she married Anthony B. Spalla, who died January 20, 2004.
Surviving are a son, Dr. Lawrence A. Spalla of Glendale, Arizona; a sister, Mrs. Mary M Grossman of Phoenix, Arizona; a nephew Dr. Gary M. Grossman, of Gilbert, Arizona; and a niece Ms. Donna M. Dowd of Phoenix, Arizona.
Deceased is a sister, Clarabelle Priddy Sherer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of Angels Church, Scottsdale, Arizona, on Saturday, January 7, 2012. Entombment will be held at a later date in the Garden Mausoleum at Washington Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the American Heart Association or Citizens Library.
