John C. Byers, Jr., 79, of Taylorstown, died peacefully, Friday, February 17, 2012, in Hixenbaugh Personal Care Home, with his wife by his side, after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
He was born on September 12, 1932, in Amwell Township, a son of John C., Sr., and Olive Jones Byers.
Mr. Byers was a 1951 graduate of Claysville High School.
A veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Byers served with the U.S. Army, from December 12, 1952, until his honorable discharge on December 11, 1955. For his service, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Unit Commendation and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was employed by Brockway Glass Plant #7, for many years, and then Ball Glass, before retiring from Penn Mould in 1996.
My Byers was a member of Taylorstown Volunteer Fire Department for many years, and also a member of the Taylorstown American Legion, Post 907.
He enjoyed camping, hunting, his cat, Abbie, and visits from daughters, grandchildren, family and friends.
On June 5, 1955, he married Elsie M. Davidson, who survives.
Surviving, in addition to his beloved wife of 56 years, are 2 daughters, Beth Ann (James) Cook, and Teri Jackson, 2 grandchildren, Emily and Eric Jackson, a sister, Norma Jean (Harold) Wright, a brother, Robert (Vickie) Byers, 2 sisters-in-law, Violet Byers and Eva Mae Byers, a special aunt and uncle, Edna and Frank “Bud” Gordon, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are 2 brothers, Donald E. Byers and Raymond “Fuzzy” Byers.
Friends will be received on Monday, from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m., in the Taylorstown Presbyterian Church, where services will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., with the Pastor Patricia Lutz officiating.
Burial will follow in Claysville Cemetery.
Military Rites will be accorded graveside by the Claysville American Legion Post #639.
