Michael John Altieri

Michael John Altieri, 79, of Meadow Lands, died unexpectedly, Saturday, April 6, 2012, in Canonsburg General Hospital. He was born July 22, 1932, in Meadowlands, a son of the late Dominic Carl Altieri Sr. and Margaret Malinak Altieri. Mr. Altieri graduated from Chartiers High School in 1950. He served in the Navy from April 2, 1952, until his honorable discharge on March 23, 1956. For his service, he was awarded a Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Altieri worked as a maintenance supervisor at Pennsylvania Transformer and later McGraw Edison. He also had worked at Precision Industries as a foreman, in the maintenance department at Chartiers-Houston School District, and most recently as a school bus driver for Schweinebraten Bus Company. Mr. Altieri was a member of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Meadow Lands, as well as a member of the Houston Legion and Alpine Club and a 50-year member of the Bears Club. A charter member of Chartiers Volunteer Fire Department, he currently was serving as its president. On May 3, 1958, he married Sylvia Kay Gorby, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Michael (Deborah) Altieri and Vincent Altieri, both of Meadowlands; a daughter, Marie (Donald) Kunselman of Washington; brother, Dominic Altieri Jr. of Meadowlands; sister, Dolores Tagliaferi of La Porte, Indiana; and two grandchildren, Sara (Mike) Boyle and Matthew Altieri. Friends will be received Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, at Noon, Thursday, April 12th. Burial will follow in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville. Military rites will be accorded graveside by the combined honor guard of VFW Post 191 and American Legion Post 902. Memorial contributions may be made to Chartiers Fire Department, 2450 West Pike Street, Houston, PA 15342; or to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, PO Box 366, Meadow Lands, PA 15347.
