Albert Luther “Blackie” Dern, 85, of Washington, died Saturday, April 28, 2012, in HJ Heinz Veterans Administration Hospital, Pittsburgh.
He was born September 25, 1927, in Pittsburgh, son of Edgar L. and Catherine McNiven Dern.
Mr. Dern graduated from Baxter High School in Pittsburgh. He served in the Army from August 21, 1950, until his honorable discharge on August 20, 1953, with a rank of corporal.
Mr. Dern worked for TWA as a baggage handler, drove a taxi for Yellow Cab for 10 years, and then was a driver for Greyhound for 17 years.
He was Lutheran by faith.
On July 27, 1994, he married Ruth C. Reed, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Christopher, Stuart and Dale; two daughters, Karen and Sharon; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are brothers, Harold “Fred” Dern, Robert Dern, who was killed in action at Pearl Harbor, and Blackie Dern; and sisters, Elizabeth Anderson, Leona White, Dorothy Cox, Hazel Dern and Audrey Bolten.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, May 21st, in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, with Pastor Linda Mankey officiating. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
