Ralph Early Armstrong, Sr., of Washington, passed peacefully in his home on Thursday, May 31, 2012.
He was born September 20, 1928, in Washington County, son of the late George Armstrong Sr. and Elizabeth H. Young Armstrong of Gilmore.
Mr. Armstrong graduated from Cecil High School and served in the Army during World War II.
He retired from Drakenfeld/Ciba Geigy after 39 years of service.
He was a lifetime member of Washington Elks 776.
Mr. Armstrong founded the Drakenfeld Couples Bowling League and also bowled in the Men’s League for 15+ years. He loved baseball and played for several local fast-pitch and softball leagues.
Mr. Armstrong loved to spend time with his wife and family at his campsite and on his pontoon boat.
On June 16, 1951, he married Mary Lee Leasure. There were married in the Venice United Presbyterian Church and celebrated 58 years together until Mary Lee passed away on June 30, 2009.
Surviving are his three children, Ralph E. Armstrong, Jr., of Washington, Cindi (Thomas) Smock of Upper St. Clair, and Janet (David) Gullborg of McMurray; three grandchildren, Sybil McCue, Carly Wise, and Andrew Kohlmyer; great-grandchild, Chloe Jane Wise; two nieces Shirley (Lou) Raymond and JoAnn (Darel) Lochinger.
Mr. Armstrong was the seventh son in his family. Deceased are his six brothers, William, Delbert, George Jr., James, Calvin and Oliver. Also deceased is a grandson, Ryan Armstrong.
Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Additional visitation will be held in the funeral home from 9 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Monday, June 4th, with Pastor Linda Mankey officiating. Burial will follow in Venice Cemetery, Cecil. Military Rites will be accorded graveside by the combined honor guard of VFW 191, Canonsburg, and American Legion 902, Houston.
