Winfield Herbert Hughes, 70, of Washington, died Sunday, July 22, 2012, in the Washington Hospital.
He was born September 2, 1941, in Washington, son of the late Winfield Scott and Ellen Nystrom Hughes.
A 1959 graduate of Washington High School, Mr. Hughes earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Washington and Jefferson College, a Master’s degree in Secondary Administration from Duquesne University, and did post-graduate work at The University of Pittsburgh.
For 36 years, he worked for McGuffey School District as an Assistant Principal and Secondary English Teacher, retiring in 1999.
Mr. Hughes was a life member of Washington County School Retirees, Pennsylvania State Education Association and National Education Association.
He was a member of Jacques DeMolay Commandery #3, Royal Arch Chapter 150, the Syria Shrine, Washington Lodge #164 F&AM, and Canonsburg Sportsmen’s Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, photography, the New York Times crossword puzzles, automobiles and dogs.
Mr. Hughes was a member of Fairhill Manor Christian Church, where he had served as a Sunday School teacher, deacon and elder.
On July 31, 1986, he married Ellen Marie Wirth, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Lt. Col. Mark Weaver (Mary-Rachael) of Evansville, Indiana, Paul M. Weaver (Sarah) of Ft. Valley, Virginia, and Justin Weaver of Philadelphia; a daughter, Clare Orwig (Scott) of Norfolk, Nebraska; and nine grandchildren, Rachael, Elise, Karla, Lauren, Paige, Jillian, Dean, Hannah and Josiah.
Friends will be received Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
