Mary Laverne "Vernie" Carson, 74, of Claysville, died Thursday, August 30, 2012, in the Washington Hospital.
She was born June 6, 1938, in Washington, a daughter of Andrew and Elma Jackson Ashmore.
Mrs. Carson was a 1956 graduate of Claysville High School. In addition to co-owning Marge and Vernie’s Diner on Route 40, she was an Avon Representative for more than 40 years and a tax collector for Buffalo Township and McGuffey School District for more than 30 years.
Mrs. Carson was a member of Taylorstown Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder, trustee, Sunday School teacher and was a member of the choir. She also was a member of the Claysville Mothers’ Club and a 54-year member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of Taylorstown Legion Unit 907.
On October 16, 1961, she married Roland W. “Bud” Carson, who died August 13, 1996.
Surviving are a son, Dale W. Carson (Carla) of San Tan Valley, Arizona; a daughter, Kandice Mae Harrison (Tim) of Claysville; two brothers, Elbin Dale Ashmore of Claysville and Larry Leroy Ashmore of Washington; a sister, Marjorie Cunningham of Claysville; two grandchildren, Deven and Cameron Harrison.
Deceased are two brothers, Robert Ashmore and Rev. Charles Andrew Ashmore.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., in Taylorstown Presbyterian Church, 31 Main Street, Taylorstown, where services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 5th, with Pastor Patricia Lutz officiating. Burial will follow in Claysville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Taylorstown Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 150, Taylorstown, PA 15365.
