George Alton Evans

George Alton Evans, 90, of Washington, died Thursday, September 6, 2012, in Southmont of Presbyterian Senior Care. He was born January 31, 1922, in Canonsburg, a son of George Thomas and Ada Belle Sinsley Evans. Mr. Evans was a 1940 graduate of Canonsburg High School and attended Penn Commercial. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army, 94th Infantry, 794th Ordnance Company. While in Europe, he was involved in the Battle of the Bulge and the Brittany Campaign. His awards include the American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four bronze battle stars, World War II Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. For over 43 years he worked as a clerk-agent for the Pennsylvania Railroad, which became Conrail. Mr. Evans was a very active member of First Lutheran Church. He enjoyed working outdoors at home, especially gardening. As a young man, he enjoyed playing softball and dart ball in church and community leagues. On June 6, 1948, he married Ruth Anna Hildebrand, who died May 8, 1992. Surviving are a daughter, Diana Ruth Schott and her husband, Rev. Dr. Kenneth N. Schott, of Washington; a brother, Lyle Edsell Evans of Washington; two grandchildren, Laura E. Piecknick and Kenneth Neal Schott III and his wife, Julie; two great-grandchildren, Madison Alexis Piecknick and Kyle Thomas Piecknick; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two daughters who died in infancy; a brother, Neal G. Evans; and two sisters, Vola M. Phillips and Dorothy L. Hainaut. Friends will be received Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, September 8th, in First Lutheran Church, Washington, with Rev. Dr. Kenneth N. Schott officiating. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. in the church. Private burial will be held at a later date in Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Music Department of First Lutheran Church, 92 West Walnut Street, Washington, PA 15301.
