John Doyle Stockdale, 89, of Prosperity, died Monday, January 28, 2013, in Presbyterian Senior Care, Washington.
He was born November 3, 1923, in Prosperity, a son of the late Hugh Quitman Stockdale and Jessie May Bryner Stockdale.
Mr. Stockdale graduated from Morris Township High School in 1942.
A World War II veteran of the Army, he served from July 17, 1944, until his honorable discharge on February 15, 1946, with a rank of Private, first class. For his service, he was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 bronze stars, and World War II Victory Medal.
In addition to being a self-employed dairy farmer, Mr. Stockdale was a former streetcar driver, employee of PA Transformer, and a bus driver for special-needs children. He served as a Morris Township Supervisor and president of Prosperity Cemetery Association, and was a volunteer fireman for the Morris Township Fire Department Station #42.
Mr. Stockdale enjoyed square dancing.
He was a member of Upper Ten Mile Presbyterian Church and American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
On October 7, 1947, he married Mildred Jean Kimberland, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, David M. (Wendy) Stockdale, Brian Douglas (Maryann) Stockdale and Patrick Doyle (Cindy) Stockdale; seven grandchildren, Christopher (Jennifer) Stockdale, Benjamin (Brandy) Stockdale, Shaun (Chad) Williamson, Brian Stockdale, Jr., Daniel (Sarah) Stockdale, Melia Stockdale and Maylei Stockdale; and four great-grandchildren, Syngin Stockdale, Jean-Luc Stockdale, Jaiden Hollowman and Sutton Williamson.
Deceased is a daughter, Sandy Nolan.
He will be sadly missed by his faithful canine companion, Bailey.
Friends will be received Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, January 31st, with Pastor Larry Deemer officiating. Burial will follow in Prosperity Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
