Samuel J. (Sammy) Insana Sr., 80, of Washington, passed away February 12, 2013, surrounded by his loving wife Mary Lou, and his 4 children. He was born October 14, 1932, in Washington, a son of the late Pietro and Carmella Insana.
He worked at Brockway Glass for 31 years until its closure and then worked at Dynamet Corporation for 12 years before retiring in 1992.
Mr. Insana, a 1951 graduate of Trinity High School, enjoyed time spent working in his garden and he also participated in a variety of team sports, including bowling, softball, church league dart ball and golf. He was a lifetime member of St. Hilary Church and volunteered his time in numerous church activities. He was also a member of the Alpine Club where his father was one of the founders.
On June 6, 1952, he married Mary Lou Lightner who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Cheryl (John) Knestrick of Washington, and 3 sons, Peter (Cathy) Insana of Rhode Island, Samuel (Susan) Insana, Jr., of Virginia, and James (Ann Marie) Insana of Florida. In addition there are 6 grandchildren, 3 granddaughters, Kristen Stedman, Michelle Myers & Erin Marr, and 3 grandsons Ryan Insana, Marc Insana & Craig Insana. He also has 6 great grandchildren, Hanna, Jacob & Anthony Stedman; Riley & Samuel Myers & Adeline Marr. Also surviving are a sister Francis White & two brothers Peter and Lawrence Insana, along with several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 1:00 to 4:00, and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, February 15th, in St. Hilary Church, followed by internment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in McMurray.
