Mary Jean Cowden, 82, of Washington, died Sunday, February 24, 2013, in Presbyterian Senior Care.
She was born January 21, 1931, in Monongahela, a daughter of the late Andrew Azzo, Jr., and Mary Marcinko Azzo.
Mrs. Cowden was a 1948 graduate of Trinity High School. She worked as a commercial loan officer at Mellon Bank for 16 years, retiring in 1987.
Mrs. Cowden was a 50+ year member of Hickory United Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the choir, served as an elder and was an active member of many committees over the years. In addition, she had been a Cub Scout Den Mother and was a volunteer at the Washington Hospital Gift Shop and a member of Washington Community Choir and Hickory Women’s Club. Mrs. Cowden enjoyed sewing and crocheting.
On December 4, 1948, she married Wayne L. Cowden, who died June 24, 2004.
Surviving are a son, Gerald W. (Marti L.) Cowden of Akron, Ohio; five grandchildren, Margaux Cowden (Beck Bailey) of Williamstown, Massachusetts, Meredith Cowden of Lakewood, Ohio, Blythe Katherine Cowden (Justin Jonas) of Columbus, Ohio, Lucas Cowden of Erie and Ean Cowden of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; one great-grandchild; a daughter-in-law, Lynne Cowden; three sisters-in-law, Nova Jones, Lois Cowden and Florence Masteller; two brothers-in-law, James Renshaw and Paul Cowden; and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased are two sons, Gregg E. Cowden and Scott N. Cowden; and two sisters, Betty Fleissner and Irene Renshaw.
Friends will be received from Noon to 1 p.m., the time of service, on Saturday, March 2nd, in Hickory United Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Bob Shull officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hickory U. P. Church, 210 Main Street, Hickory, PA 15340
