Vincent S. Chmel, Jr.

Vincent Stanley Chmel, Jr., 88 of Washington, died April 18, 2013, in Donnell House, where he had been under hospice care since February 11th. He was born June 20, 1924, in Star City, West Virginia, a son of the late Vincent Stanley and Helen (Anusiewicz) Chmielevski Sr. In 1943, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, and served as a military policeman until his honorable discharge on April 7, 1946. For his service, he was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and American Theater Ribbon. Mr. Chmel worked for Pittsburgh Coal for 22 years then worked for 22 years at McGraw Edison, from where he retired at age 62. He was a loving and kind husband, father and granddad who enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially golf. Mr. Chmel was a member of Jefferson Avenue United Methodist Church. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Louanna Dene Johnston, whom he married on January 30, 1954. Also surviving are two sons, Vincent S. Chmel III (Cindy) of Claysville and Dean T. Chmel (Elisa) of Wheeling, West Virginia; a daughter, Vicki Chmel White (Ted) of Mooresville, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Sabrina and Erik Chmel of Houston, Taylor, Lauren and Alexandra Chmel of Wheeling, and Hunter White of Mooresville, North Carolina; and a sister, Jeanette D. Floss of Canonsburg. Friends will be received Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd, 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 25th, in the funeral home, with Rev. John Hoffman officiating. Inurnment will follow in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care of the Washington Hospital, 155 Wilson Avenue, Washington, PA 15301.
