William E. Frye, Sr.

William Edgar Frye, Sr., 89, of Hickory, died June 5, 2013, in the Washington Hospital, following a brief illness. He was born November 5, 1923, in Mt. Pleasant Township, a son of Albert Floyd Frye and Sarah Viola Sloop Frye. Mr. Frye was a graduate of Hickory High School and worked as a heavy equipment operator at Aloe Coal Company for 43 years. During World War II, he served in the Army as a Sergeant with Company A, 157th Engineering Battalion. He was involved in campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. For his service, he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal with 4 bronze battle stars, and a Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Frye was a member of Hickory United Evangelical Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and deacon, and also an active life member of UMW International. He was a former member of Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department, founding member and first president of Mt. Pleasant Township Little League Baseball, and an umpire and member of Washington County Umpires Association. Mr. Frye volunteered for Habitat for Humanity for 12 years and enjoyed woodworking. On August 23, 1947, he married Florence Luella Martin, who died June 13, 2011. Surviving are two sons, William E. Frye, Jr., (Susan) of McDonald and Ronald Frye (Cynthia) of Elizabethtown; five grandchildren, Jesse Frye, Erica Palmer, Rhonda Rodriguez, Richard “Rocky” McGeary and Kimberly Dawson; 10 great-grandchildren, Rowan Frye, Keaton Frye, Maranda West, Shelby West, Amanda McGeary, Samantha McGeary, Rocky McGeary, Ty McGeary, Sydney Dawson, and Broc Dawson. Deceased are brothers, Albert Jr., David L., James M., Harry L. and Leroy Frye; and sisters, Elizabeth Sherwood, Mary Rankin, Adeline Sheller, Viola Jean Dorma and Thelma Marquis. Friends will be received Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Additional visitation will be held in Hickory United Evangelical Presbyterian Church from 1 to 2 p.m., the time of service, Saturday, June 8th, with Rev. Bob Shull officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Prospect Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
