William “Bill” Orndoff, 87, of Washington, passed away on Friday, September 6, 2013, surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on February 27, 1926, in Rogersville, a son of the late William Woodrow and Nell Pearl Day Orndoff.
He attended Washington High School, until he left to join the Army Air Corps, where he spent his service time in Texas, before returning to graduate.
Mr. Orndoff drove busses for Blue Ridge and Greyhound, and was a founder of the Suburban Lines Bus Company, where he served as president. He later formed the A&W Bus Lines.
He served as a part time police officer, and later roadmaster for South Strabane Township, where he was a longtime township supervisor. After his retirement, he drove the shuttle van for Budd Baer Car Dealership.
Mr. Orndoff was a charter member of the South Strabane Fire Department #2, on Oak Spring Road, where he held several positions, including fire chief for 10 years, training officer and safety officer. In December, 2012, he received an award from the Pennsylvania Senate, for 50 years of dedicated service to the Fire Department.
A favorite pastime was meeting with friends at Eat N Park and Al an’ Ruben’s. He also enjoyed jazz music, and would travel all over the local area to hear his favorite bands. He was well known for always having candy to give away.
On August 26, 1950, he married his beloved wife, Virginia Larkin, who passed away on December 10, 2007.
Surviving are 2 sons, Robert (Barbara) Orndoff and David (Kimberly) Orndoff, both of Washington; a daughter, Judy (the late Fred “Buddy”) Boone, of Washington; 4 granddaughters, Carrie (Will) Nabors, Michelle Orndoff and Bobbi Orndoff, all of Washington; and Olivia Orndoff, of Nashville, TN; 1 grandson, Joshua Orndoff, of Nashville, TN; 3 step-granddaughters, Sheila Bonus, Kayla Bonus and Alicia Bonus, all of Washington.
Deceased is a sister, Nora (Robert) Pethtel.
Friends will be received on Monday and Tuesday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Ave., Washington, where services will be held at 12:30 p.m., on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, with Pastor C.D. Croscutt officiating.
A Fireman’s service will be held at 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, in the funeral home.
Burial will follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, accompanied by a Military Honor Guard.
Military Rites will be accorded graveside by Edwin Scott Linton, Post 175 of the American Legion.
