Betty Jeanne Moore Kurek, 88, a lifelong resident of Washington, died on October 25 at the Donnell House after a brief illness.
Born on November 17, 1924, Betty was the only child of the late Walter Moore and Minnie Clish.
Betty graduated from Washington High School in January 1943 and went to work at Duncan Miller where she met the late Edward “Ed” Kurek whom she married on August 27, 1946. Ed died in 2007.
Betty was active in her community. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and past president of its Edwin Scott Linton Unit 175. She was also a member and past corresponding secretary of the Washington Council of Republican Women. Her most treasured membership though was as a parishioner of Trinity Church where she was baptized in 1925 and continued to be active throughout her life. Betty was an avid Steelers and Pirates fan. She also enjoyed traveling, especially the annual trips she and her husband made to Maryland to visit his sisters and their families.
While Betty and Ed were never blessed with children of their own, they were very engaged in the lives of their nieces, nephews and neighbor’s children. Betty faithfully remembered birthdays and anniversaries and was always a favorite guest at graduations, weddings and other special events.
In addition to her nieces and nephews, Betty is survived by one sister-in-law, Mary Kurek Kish of Clinton, MD.
