Gladys M. Birch, 100, of Washington, died Tuesday, October 29, 2013. She was born January 10, 1913, in Canton Township, a daughter of James W. and Nannie Lattamore Birch. Ms. Birch graduated from Trinity High School, in 1932. She was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, where she served as Superintendent of Sabbath School, Assistant Clerk and Deaconess. In Washington, Ms. Birch worked at F.W. Woolworth Company and Hazel Atlas Glass Company. After moving to Chicago, Illinois, she worked for 12 years at the Institute for Juvenile Research. Following retirement, she had been involved in volunteer work. She was a member of the Illinois State Employees Association of Retirees. After moving back from Chicago, she was the first person to sign up for residence at the Thomas Campbell Apartments, when they were built in 1978, and she lived there until October 10, 2003, when she moved into the Humbert Lane Nursing Home. Ms. Birch was the last member of her immediate family. Deceased are 4 sisters, Lottie B. Birch, Bessie M. Miller, Virginia Morrison, and Pearl Welch, and a brother, Russell Birch. Friends will be received on Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Ave., Washington, where services will be held at 10 a.m., on Friday, November 1, 2013, with Pastor Robert Williams, of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the North Buffalo Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 901 North Main St., Washington, PA 15301.
