Florence Scott Carpenter

February 2, 1921 — April 19, 2014

Florence Fuller Scott Carpenter, 93, of Washington, died Saturday, April 19, 2014, in the home of her daughter, Susan, while under the care of Washington Health System Hospice and Pam. She was born February 2, 1921, in West Middletown, on a dairy farm, a daughter of Aaron Halden Scott and Edith E. Scott. Mrs. Carpenter graduated from East Washington High School and from Penn Commercial with a diploma in bookkeeping. She worked as a nurse assistant, office manager and bookkeeper for Dr. McCarrell in Hickory and Avella for 25 years. She also worked for nine years at J.C. Penney. Mrs. Carpenter loved to cook, make fudge and desserts. In addition, she loved to plant flowers and care for them. In recent years, she was a two-time winner of the county’s Senior Spelling Bee. She held a special place in her heart for her home farm, still a working dairy farm, which she visited all her life. In 1941, she married William “Harry” Carpenter, who died April 1, 2014. Surviving are two daughters, Sallie (Tom) Alrutz, and Susan C. Amon, both of Washington; a grandson, Tracy Magnelli; and several nieces and nephews. She had morning caregivers at her home for 1-½ years in addition to the daily help her daughters, Sallie and Susan, provided. They were very loved by her and she had a special bond with her niece, Marcy. Deceased are three sisters, Mary Scott McGaughey, Lila Brewer and Lola Hughes. Mrs. Carpenter attended Chartiers Crossroads Presbyterian Church and its Young at Heart group. She loved her church and its members. A kind and gentle soul, she had many friends young and old who adored her for her loving, caring ways. She devoted her life to the happiness of her husband and children. Her daughters are grateful for such a loving and loyal mother and understand her desire to be with her their dad. Friends will be received Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 24th, in Chartiers Crossroads United Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Scott Bunting officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Prospect Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care of the Washington Hospital, 155 Wilson Avenue, Washington, PA 15301; or to Chartiers Crossroads Presbyterian Church, 502 Hickory Ridge Road, Washington, PA 15301.
