William Crosbie Engle, 103 of Washington, died Saturday, May 24, 2014.
He was born January 16, 1911 in Washington, the son of the late Russell George Engle and Jennie Crosbie Engle.
During the World War II, he served four years with the Bell Aircraft and US Army Air Corp. as a mechanic instructor on P-39’s Fighter Aircraft. After the war he started Engle’s Radio Sales and Repair in Washington and eventually went into TV sales and service. He always enjoyed boating and he built a boat in the basement of his home. In 1946 he went into boat sales and service. In 1951-1952 he chartered the Ten Mile Power Squadron and served as Squadron Commander. He served as instructor in Basic Boating-Seamanship and advanced piloting classes. Elected to the District 7 Bridge after serving four years as Lt. Commander, he was elected to District 7 Commander of U.S. Power Squadrons covering three states. He also was elected to Squadron Educational Office of Ten Mile Squadron.
He established Engle’s Holiday Harbor and Marina in 1959 on the Ten Mile Creek in Millsboro. He and his sons raced E-Service Class runabouts for many years and won three national championships.
Mr. Engle was a member of First United Presbyterian Church, American Power Boat Association, Life member of U.S. Power Squadron, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Masonic Lodge #164, Pittsburgh Syria Temple Shriners and Coudersport Consistory, also a long time member of the Elks.
Mr. Engle was married twice; his first marriage was to the late Elizabeth Brown Engle in 1930. After her death he married Lois Wise Engle who is also deceased.
Surviving are two children, Lona Jane (William) Vogeley, John Hugh (Loraine) Engle; ten grandchildren, Lori Martin, Darcy (Paul) Bickerton, William (Elizabeth) Vogeley, Craig (Michelle) Vogeley, John H. Engle Jr., Linda (William) Westfall, Robert (Barbara) Engle, Elizabeth (Christopher) Knisely, Christy (Kevin) Pollen, Brian (Rebecca) Engle; two step grandchildren, Ashley (Ava) Bickerton and Michael Bickerton; seventeen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; two daughter in laws, Patricia and Rebecca Engle.
Deceased are a two sons, William Robert Engle and Thomas Richard Engle; a brother, John Russell Engle.
Friends will be received Tuesday, May 27, 2014 from 6 to 8 at William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Ave, Washington, where services will be held Wednesday, May 28th at 11:00 a.m. with Rev, James Newman officiating. Burial will follow at Greene
County Memorial Park.
