Edward Richard Zelenka Sr., 91 of Washington, died Tuesday, June 3, 2014 in Humbert Lane.
He was born December 10, 1922 in Enterprise, PA, the son of Paul Zelenka and Teresa Kolinek Zelenka.
Mr. Zelenka was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II. He was involved in battles in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe, where he received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, Victory Medal and European African, Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with five bronze battle stars.
Edward was employed at Universal Cyclops in Bridgeville and Lawrenceville as an inspector.
Mr. Zelenka was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church and served as an usher for many years.
He was a member of the Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post #175 and Veterans of Foreign Wars #927.
Edward enjoyed going to Shorty’s in Wolfdale most Saturdays with his grandson John and daughter, Becky. He looked forward to watching the daily number at 7:00 p.m. and always had an unlit cigar with him. He was a Pirate and Steelers fan.
On April 23, 1953 he married Edith Mae Powers who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Edward R. (Sandy Cox) Zelenka Jr. of Washington, Stephen M. Zelenka of Washington; two daughters, Debra Winfield of Washington, Rebecca (Dave) Cecchine; four grandchildren, John Michael Burnette Jr. of Greensburg, Kyra (Joe) Matachak of Cranberry Twp., Kellie Winfield and Samantha Zelenka; three great grandchildren, Jacob and Alyson Matachak and Joshua.
Deceased are seven brothers, John, Paul, Charlie, Martin, Andrew, Anthony and Steve Zelenka; three sisters, Mary, Sophie and Julie.
Friends will be received Friday, June 6, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Ave, Washington. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 119 W. Chestnut St, Washington with Father Lou Pascazi as celebrant. Burial will follow at Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #175.
