Herbert "Herky" Dallas Hughes

Herbert Dallas “Herky” Hughes, 86 of Washington, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at home following a 2-year illness. He was born November 2, 1927 in Washington the son of the late Raymond Hughes Sr. and Beatrice Weiner Hughes. He graduated from Washington High School’s class of 1948 and was a veteran of the U.S. Army from1950-1952 and was stationed in Alaska. He was employed at Hazel Atlas and later at Brockway; he retired in 1989 after 35 years of employment at Washington Steel Corporation. He was a member of First Christian Church. Herky played semi-pro football for 2 years prior to joining the Army and 4 years afterwards. He also played for the Army from 1950-1952. He had a reserved seat for Washington High School Football for 60 years. He coached the 7th Ward Midget Football team for many years and was a member of the Washington High School Boosters. On August 21, 1953 he married Martha Elizabeth McDowell who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Larry Hughes of Washington, Cary (Amy) Hughes of Gibsonia; a daughter, Jodi (Chuck) Derrow of Washington; three grandchildren, Eva Hughes, Ethan Hughes and Stacy (Andy) Herrick. Deceased are a brother, Raymond Hughes Jr.; two sisters, Dorothy Knox and Gwen Fulton. Friends will be received Sunday, July 6, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Ave, Washington, where services will be held Monday, July 7, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Washington Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Washington High School Football Boosters Club, 201 Allison Ave, Washington, PA 15301.
