Charles Edward Carpenter

Charles Edward Carpenter, 82, of Washington, died Wednesday, August 27, 2014, in Donnell House. He was born August 24, 1932, in Point Marion. A graduate of Washington High School, Mr. Carpenter, served in the Navy from May 14, 1951, until his honorable discharge on April 22, 1955, with a rank of Airman. He served aboard the U.S.S. Antietam and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Navy Occupation Medal with European Clasp. Mr. Carpenter worked at Jessop Steel for 39 years. He was a member of Washington Alliance Church, where he volunteered a considerable amount of his time and also participated on its dart ball team. In addition, he was a member of the Jessop Club and a 46-year member of American Legion Hunt-Kennedy post 639, Claysville. Mr. Carpenter loved his family and enjoyed golfing and bowling On February 14, 1975, he married Betty L. Earnest, who survives. Also surviving are four sons, Charles A. (Julie) Carpenter, William Moore and Kevin (Cathy) Moore, all of Washington, and Brian (Marla) Moore of Baldwin; four daughters, Sharon (Brian) Mallich of Peters Township, Cynthia Ingram of Washington, Rebecca (Tom) O’Toole of South Park and Linda Burnquist of Washington; three brothers, Harold Brownlee of Michigan, Sam Brownlee of Falls Church, Virginia and Robert Brownlee of Washington; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Deceased are a son, Russell E. Carpenter; his parents, Edison and Inez Carpenter; a sister, Martha Jane Guard; and a brother, Willis Brownlee. Friends will be received Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, August 30th, with Rev. James Newman officiating. Burial will follow in Upper Buffalo Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Hunt-Kennedy Post 639.
