Alpheus Berl Hillberry, Jr.

Alpheus Berl “Sonny” Hillberry, Jr., 77, of Washington, passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2016, in the Washington Hospital. He was a sinner, saved by grace, born on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 1939, son of Alpheus Berl Hillberry, Sr., and Beulah Faye Leeper Hillberry Hull. On August 17, 1968, he married Donna Zediker, in Amity Presbyterian Church. Donna, with whom he shared forty-eight years of marriage, survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jeffrey Berl (Lisa) Hillberry, of Amity, and David Collin (Allison) Hillberry, of Sycamore, PA; five grandsons, Jeffrey, Shane, Cody (Amanda), Collin (fiancée, Chelsea), and Colton Hillberry; a brother, Larry (Linda) Hillberry, of Amity, a special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Regis and Janet (Zediker) Walther, of Prosperity; a stepsister, Helen Michaels, of Florida; two stepbrothers, Kenneth Hull, of the state of California, and Dwight Hull, of Florida; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and step nieces and nephews. Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a sister, Jeanette Hillberry Riggle Ankrom, two brothers-in-law, Richard Riggle, and Harry Ankrom, two stepbrothers, Ralph and Wilbert Hull, and his stepfather, Earl Hull. He was a 1957 graduate of Trinity High School. Mr. Hillberry was a U.S. Army veteran, having served at Camp Page, Korea, with the 226th Signal Company, 4th Missile Command. Later, he served with a Signal Company attached to the 2nd Armored Division, in Fort Hood, Texas. Alpheus had worked for thirty years at the Washington K-Mart, one year at Barr Hardware, in Canonsburg, and thirteen years in the hardware department at Lorenzi Lumber. His interests were working in the garden, genealogy, and reading. He was a member of Amity Presbyterian Church, then Grace Brethren Church, and most recently at Calvary Baptist Church in Washington. Mr. Hillberry worked with the Calvary Mission Team, the New Hope Puppet Team, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and he started a picnic and Christmas party for former K-Mart employees. Friends will be received on Thursday, December 22, 2016, from 4 to 8 p.m., in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Ave., Washington, PA 15301, where services will be held at 11;00 a.m., Friday, December 23, 2016, with Rev. Fred McCloskey officiating. Burial will follow in the Washington Cemetery.
