James D. Zack, Sr.

James Daniel Zack, Sr., 60, of Scenery Hill, died unexpectedly, Wednesday, September 8, 2010, in the Washington Hospital Emergency Department. He was born November 23, 1949, in Washington, a son of the late Roy A. and Marie Nixon Zack. Mr. Zack was a graduate of Washington Institute of Technology. He worked as a welder and boilermaker for Local 906 and also worked as a custodian and groundskeeper at California University of Pennsylvania for three years. Mr. Zack served in the United States Marine Corps from September 28, 1967, until his honorable discharge on November 21, 1969, with a rank of Lance Corporal. He earned the M-14 Rifle Badge – Marksman, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Commendation Medal with Device, and Purple Heart with two stars. Mr. Zack was a member of Disabled American Veterans, the VFW, and Glyde Legion 897. On June 7, 1969, he married Darlene Ward, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, James Zack, Jr., of Harrisburg and Michael (Mariah) Zack of Grafton, Wisconsin; a daughter, Tammy (Scott) Tharp of Mechanicsburg; two sisters, Shirley Parker of Ohio and Betty Zack of Uniontown; and four grandchildren, Brandon Tharp, Colin Tharp, Jacob Zack and Nathan Zack. Deceased are two brothers, David Zack and Thomas Zack; and a grandchild, Brittany Tharp. Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, September 13th. Burial will follow in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
