Ralph Britton Shunk, 88, of Washington, died unexpectedly, Thursday, November 25, 2010, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.
He was born June 8, 1922, in Wolfdale, a son of Andrew S. Shunk and Carrie Dulcie Canan Shunk.
Mr. Shunk was a 1940 graduate of Trinity High School and attended Washington and Jefferson College.
He served in the Army from May 5, 1943, until his honorable discharge on February 21, 1946, with a rank of Private First Class. For his service he was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Shunk worked for 39 years at Washington Steel Corporation. At the time of his retirement, he was the rolling mill foreman.
Mr. Shunk was a life-member of Third United Presbyterian Church, American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175, Disabled American Veterans, Arms Club, and BPOE.
On December 3, 1944, he married Evelyn Gibbs, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Douglas M. Shunk, of Duncan, South Carolina; a daughter, Bobbie Andrea Shunk Gaunt of Saugatuck, Michigan; two sisters, Martha Jane Duff of Mt. Lebanon and Joan Maceyko of Savannah, Georgia.
Deceased is a sister, Helen Shunk, who died as an infant.
Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, November 29th. Burial will follow in Woodruff Memorial Park.
