Harry Carter Crothers, 78, of Washington, died Wednesday, December 1, 2010, in his home.
He was born June 26, 1932, in Claysville, a son of Gaylord and Pauline Carter Crothers.
Mr. Crothers was a 1951 graduate of Washington High School. On January 8, 1953, he joined the Army and served in the 101st Airborne Division until his honorable discharge on January 7, 1955, as a corporal. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
He retired from Western Center and owned Reed and Cameron Hardware for 13 years and Ye Old Locksmith for many years.
Mr. Crothers was a member of Faith United Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, and a life member of North Franklin Volunteer Fire Company, where was past president and served as captain and chaplain. He was also a member of Western Pennsylvania Firemen�s Association and Washington County Firemen�s Association, served on the board of directors of Senior Citizens, and was a former board member of the Washington City Mission.
On June 16, 1957, he married Phyllis Horner, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Kevin W. Crothers of Washington; a daughter, Brenda L. Caldwell (Robert) of Washington; a brother, Richard S. Crothers of Clarington, Ohio; a sister, Karen Gibson of Sellersville; and two grandchildren, Gregory W. Caldwell and Megan E. Caldwell.
Deceased are a brother, Roy M. Crothers; and a brother and sister who died infancy.
Friends will be received Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, December 4th, with Rev. Ed DeLair officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith United Presbyterian Church, 900 East Beau Street, Washington, PA 15301; or to North Franklin Volunteer Fire Company, Sylvan Drive, Washington, PA 15301.
