James Paul Costanzo, 87, of Apollo, formerly of Washington, died Wednesday, March 24, 2010, in Donnell House, following a lengthy illness.
He was born July 19, 1922, in Washington, a son of Antonio and Anna Pellagrino Costanzo.
Mr. Costanzo was a businessman and bar owner.
He was Catholic by faith and was a member of the Moose and American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
On November 20, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. He served outside the continental U.S. and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Costanzo was honorably discharged on April 5, 1946, as a Fireman, First Class.
On November 3, 1946, he married Mary Shumar, who died July 2, 2009.
Surviving are three daughters, Judith A. Shapery of LaJolla, California, Pamela S. Costanza of Apollo, and Joni L. Schilinski of Hickory; a brother, Frank Costanzo of Washington; a sister, Yolanda Levato of Washington; and three grandchildren, Thomas James, Kiersten Ryan and Steven William Schilinski.
Deceased are a brother, John; and four sisters, Kay, Rose, Celeste and Mary.
Friends will be received Noon to 2 p.m., the hour of a Blessing Service, Saturday, March 27th, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington, with Father Nicholas Spirko officiating. Military rites will be accorded at the funeral home by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
