Harold (Sam) Riggle

Harold C. “ Sam “ Riggle, 80, of Chartiers Township, died Saturday, August 14, 2010, in his home after having been sick since February. He was born in Claysville on September 18, 1929, a son of Charles L. and Ona S. Hunt Riggle. Mr. Riggle was a 1948 graduate of Hickory High School and later served in the United States Army in Korea having received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He worked for more than 27 years at RCA in Washington as a Technician. On February 2, 1951, he married the love of his life, Geraldine Ullom, who died in 1969. He was a member of Crossroads United Presbyterian Church. Sam was an avid hunter and farmer throughout his life, having raised many types of farm animals and maintaining multiple gardens. He enjoyed spending his time watching his grandchildren participate in sports and activities, always supporting their teams. Sam especially loved watching the Chartiers-Houston girls’ softball teams and rarely missed a game. He harassed the umpires and taught the coaches how to better coach the game or so he thought. His granddaughters each fulfilled his expectations and that of the “ Riggle Softball Dynasty “ with a medal count of five silvers and one gold. Surviving are a son, Harold C. “ Rusty “ ( LuAnn ) Riggle , three daughters, Terry ( Jim ) Southern, Doris Hanning, and Susan ( Bob ) Hall, all of Washington; grandchildren, Richard Southern, Erin Hess, Juanita Southern-Loar, Erica and Elexis Riggle, Donnie Hanning, Ashley, Samantha, and R.J. Hall; and great-grandchildren Jessie, Zachary Southern, Bella, Brooklyn Hess, and Teegan Bogden; as well as several nieces and nephews and his life-long friend, Kenny Berdine. Preceding him in death are a sister Eleanor Swart and brothers, Wayne, Jack, Bob, Charles, and Dale Riggle. Friends of Harold C. “ Sam “ Riggle, 80, of Chartiers Township, who died Saturday, August 14, 2010, will be received on Tuesday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Ave., where services will be held on Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at 11:00 AM with Pastor Gary Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Family is suggesting donations be made to The Donnell House or Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
