Andrew John Umshares, 71, of Washington, died Thursday, June 18, 2010, in Washington Hospital.
He was born June 10, 1939, in Washington, a son of the late Anthony and Mary Yaros Umshares.
Mr. Umshares graduated from Washington High School and was a member of St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church.
On December 10, 1962, he entered the U.S. Army. For his service he was awarded a Sharpshooter (Rifle) Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and was honorably discharged December 9, 1964.
Mr. Umshares was an electrician at Jessop Steel-Allegheny Ludlum, retiring after 38 years of employment.
He was a member of the Jessop Club and Pulaski Club.
Mr. Umshares was a devoted fan of the Washington High School “Little Prexies” football team and was a Notre Dame fan.
On August 11, 1999, he married Susie Lawson, who survives.
Also surviving are three children, Denise (Brian) Russell, of Washington, Anthony (Janet) Umshares, Sr., of Longs, South Carolina, and Beth Ann Johnston (Joey Womack) of St. Albans, West Virginia; a step son, David L. Strosnider, of Hilton Head, South Carolina; a brother, Alexander Umshares, of Washington; two sisters, Evelyn Umshares (Howard) Stevens, of Rochester, New York, and Dorothy (John) Zollars, of Washington; six grandchildren, Robert and Anthony Green, Anthony, Jr. and Cassandra Umshares, and Hunter and Michaela Johnston; two step grandchildren, Brian Russell, Jr., and Carli Womack; and several nieces and nephews.
He also leaves behind his beloved dog Samurai.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 22, 2010, in St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church, 320 Henderson Avenue, Washington, with Father Thomas D. O’Neil, as celebrant. Entombment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, McMurray. Military rites will be accorded by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.
