Glade A. Eakin

Glade Ambrose Eakin, 80, of Washington, died Tuesday, February 23, 2010, in Donnell House. He was born May 7, 1929, in Washington, a son of Fred Ward Eakin and Nellie Marie Tennant Eakin. Mr. Eakin was a 1947 graduate of Washington High School, where he participated in football, baseball and basketball. In October 1970, after 22 years of service, Master Sergeant Eakin retired from the Air Force. He was a Vietnam veteran and earned seven Air Force Commendations, an AF Longevity Service Award, AF Outstanding Unit Award, Army and Air Force Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze service star, and a Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Award. His service took him to all corners of the United States, as well as many parts of the world, including Bermuda and Okinawa. After his retirement from the Air Force, Mr. Eakin was employed at Rudy Schreiber Chevrolet and Budd Baer Buick and Pontiac for 20 years, retiring in 1994. He was an active bowler and member of Washington VFW 927, American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175, Moose Lodge 22 and Eagles 687. On December 7, 1950, he married Leaetta A. “Sis” Huffman, who died September 12, 1998. Surviving are two sons, Glade A. (Betsy) Eakin II, who was born in Bermuda, and Richard A. (Stacey) Eakin, who was born in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts; a daughter, Tracie A. (Kenneth) Grove, who was born in Dover, Delaware; a sister, Patricia L. (James) Glendenning; nine grandchildren, James Eakin, Denielle Steck, Ashley Blackhurst, Renee Grove, Carly Grove, Alecia Fincham, Erin Palfreyman, Jason Palfreyman, and Ronald Lyle, III; and nine great-grandchildren, Dylan Eakin, Abigail and Madalynn Blackhurst, Cameron and Gabriel Steck, and Hallie, Emma, Riley and Jensen Lyle. Deceased are a daughter, Debra A. Eakin Beatty, who was born in Las Vegas, Nevada; and a brother, Fred Ward Eakin Jr. Friends will be received 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 26th, in Church of Christ, 700 Allison Avenue, Washington, with Rev. Robert Turrill officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
