George Allen Johnson, 75, of Washington, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born April 11, 1934, in Amwell Township, a son of the late Marion C. and Nettie Kelsey Johnson.
Mr. Johnson attended Vankirk School, a one-room schoolhouse in Vankirk Station and was a 1954 graduate of Trinity High School.
On October 7, 1954, Mr. Johnson was inducted into the United States Army, serving until his honorable discharge on October 3, 1956, with a rank of Specialist, third class. He was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal-Germany.
For five years he worked at Tygart Valley Glass and for 39 years he worked at Lydic Printing Company as a letterpress operator.
Mr. Johnson was a member of Trinity Bible Fellowship, American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175, Meadowlands Sportsmen’s Club, Travelers Protective Association, and the Civil Defense – Auxiliary Police. He was a former member of Buffalo Grange.
Mr. Johnson enjoyed deer hunting and camping.
On September 14, 1957, in Meadowlands Methodist Church, he married Kathryn Louise Hampson, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Sharon K. Johnson and Karen (Thomas) Quinn, both of Washington, and Judy Bollinger of Fort Myers, Florida; a brother, David W. Johnson of Washington; and five grandchildren, Lucas Johnson, Matthew and Katie Quinn, and Heather and Donald Bollinger.
Deceased are two brothers, Johnny Johnson and Paul Johnson; and two sisters, Helen Daley and Frances Knestrick.
Friends will be received 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6th, with Rev. Michael Roach officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
