Carol Beth Hughes Newman, 53, of Washington, died Thursday, December 31, 2009, in the Washington Hospital, following a five-month illness.
She was born August 20, 1956, in Washington, a daughter of Edward K. “Red” Hughes and Rosemary Mantia Hanna.
Mrs. Newman was a 1974 graduate of Washington High School and worked in food service at the Meadows Casino.
She was a member of VFW 927 Ladies Auxiliary, L.O.O.M. 22 and the Independent Club, and enjoyed NASCAR, fishing and the Washington Wild Things.
Mrs. Newman was Catholic by faith.
On July 24, 1993, she married James W. Newman, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Jesse Gray of Washington; a daughter, Jennifer Carmichael of Bridgeville; a step-son, J.J. Newman of Clifton, New Jersey; two step-daughters, Christina Hunter and Michele Newman, both of Wheeling, West Virginia; two brothers, Edward J. Hughes and James W. Hughes, both of Washington; two sisters, Rita Ann Garrick and Vickie Lynn Dever, both of Washington; a grandchild, Malia Carmichael; and a step-grandson, Collin.
A gathering of friends will be held Sunday, January 3rd, from 2 to 5:30 p.m., the time of a memorial service, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 331 South Main Street, Washington, PA 15301
