U.S. Army veteran
Guy D. Houston, 78, of Washington, died unexpectedly Tuesday, January 5, 2010, in Washington Hospital.
He was born February 11, 1931, in Strabane, a son of Robert C. and Emma Coughenour Houston.
Mr. Houston graduated from Trinity High School in 1949 and was a member of West Washington United Methodist Church.
On August 14, 1952, he entered the U.S. Army; he attained the rank of sergeant. He received the Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation and Good Conduct Medal, and was honorably discharged May 13, 1954.
Mr. Houston was an avid sports fan. He played as an end on one of Trinity's undefeated football teams. He and his team members were inducted into Pennsylvania's Sports Hall of Fame.
He was an avid gardener and enjoyed polka dancing with his wife.
Mr. Houston was a structural ironworker with Local 3 in Pittsburgh.
On June 2, 1951, he married Catherine Mancina, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Kathy Adams (Ken) of Avella and Debbie Houston (Edward Levine) of Newbern, N.C.; two sisters, Anna Jane Zedel of McMurray and Beverly Keibler of Belfonte; and three grandchildren, Mason Adams, Rachel Adams and Emily Adams.
Deceased is a brother, Charles Lee Houston.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 9, with the Rev. John Hoffman officiating. Burial will follow in North Buffalo Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to West Washington United Methodist Church's Renovation Fund, 625 Fayette Street, Washington, PA 15301. Military rites will be accorded by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.
