Elaine Angela Johnson

April 7, 1948 — November 25, 2009

Elaine Angela Johnson, 61, of Washington, passed away peacefully at her home, with her girls by her side, on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 after a courageous battle with Leukemia. She was born April 7, 1948 in Washington, a daughter of Katherine Scott Avolia and the late Angelo Avolia. Mrs. Johnson graduated from Washington High School in 1966. Upon graduation she began her employment with Bell Telephone and worked there until 1976. While there she was elected to serve as the company's representative at the United Way Princess Pageant. She also served as the past secretary of Washington County Council of the Arts. On August 29, 1970, she married Edwin Carroll Johnson, who died November 12, 1994. Elaine and her husband Ed built their home and started their family in South Franklin Township. Once their two daughters were old enough to attend school, Elaine began her 25 year career with the McGuffey School District. During that time she served as an advisor for the McGuffey Youth Cheerleaders and the PTA president at Joe Walker Elementary School. She also researched the history behind Joe Walker School and made arrangements for John Walker, brother of Joe Walker, to visit the children at the school. Mrs. Johnson later accepted a position as secretary to the principal at McGuffey High School. She was currently serving as MESPA Union President. While not at work you could always find Elaine working the front gates at the McGuffey High School home football games or at Gabe's searching for her next bargain. Surviving in addition to her mother, are two daughters, Kari Elaine (Aaron) Borello and Amanda Scott (Brandon) Pauls; a brother, David Scott Avolia, all of Washington; a granddaughter, Kendell Scott Pauls; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her faithful companion Millie, her Jack Russell Terrier. Friends will be received 12:00pm to 2:00pm and 6:00pm and 8:00pm, Sunday and Monday, at William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am, Tuesday, December 1, 2009, in Immaculate Conception Church with Father Joseph Sioli officiating. Burial will follow in the Washington Cemetery. At the request of the deceased, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Washington Area Humane Society, P.O. Box 66, Eight-Four, PA, 15330.
