Verna Mae Martin Evans, 98, of Washington, died on Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at Southmont Presbyterian Senior Care.
She was born on May 11, 1911, in Washington, a daughter of William and Bertha Hewitt Ackley.
Verna had been a cook at W&J College. She also had been a nurse at Manor Nursing Home on Beau Street.
She enjoyed reading and cooking.
Mrs. Evans was a member of the Broad Street Baptist Church.
She was previously married to both Charles Clifford Martin, who died in 1973, and the late Martin Evans.
Surviving are 2 sons, William Martin, of Pendleton, NJ and Robert Martin, of Washington; 2 daughters, Barbara Martin, of Washington and Shirley (Harold) Hopkins, of Claysville; 2 sisters, Nora Calvert, of Washington and Margaret Thomas, of Claysville; 7 grandchildren, Rod Temple, Cheryl Martin Lowry and David, James, Brian, Stacey and Charles Martin; 16 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to her parents, are a son, Charles Edward Martin, a grandson, Donald Temple, 2 brothers, John and Ray Ackley and 3 sisters, Edith Potter, Stella Cacia and Josephine Pierson
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 24, 2010. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery.
