Clair R. “ Smitty “ Smith, age 80, of Washington, died Sunday, December 20, 2009, in the Washington County Health Center after having been in declining health.
Mr. Smith was born in Washington on August 23, 1929, a son of Harry A. and Hazel Riddle Smith. He was a graduate of Trinity High School as was a life-long farmer, working his own farm and delivering hay to Amish farmers in Ohio on a regular basis.
He was Presbyterian by faith. His favorite joy was being actively involved with horses and participated in the National Pike Wagon Train.
Surviving are a son, Paul ( Karen ) Smith of Williamsburg, Virginia; a daughter Sally ( David ) Wibbels of Adairsville, Georgia; a sister Lois Dale Smith of Washington; two nieces, Agnes Lee and Lois Gnagey; and a nephew, David Gnagey.
Mr. Smith is preceded in death by a sister, Jean Smith Gnagey; and Penny Guthrie, who he considered family for many years.
At the request of the deceased, burial will be private in Washington Cemetery and a memorial service will be announced and held at a later date. The family is requesting memorial donations be made to Faith United Presbyterian Church Building Fund or the Washington County Humane Society.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 6, 2010, in Faith United Presbyterian Church, 900 East Beau Street, Washington.
