Katherine Mary Avolia, 88, of Washington, died Friday, November 19, 2010, at the Washington Hospital. She was born on October 11, 1922, in Washington, a daughter of George H. and Katherine Mary Myers Scott. Mrs. Avolia was a 1940 graduate of Trinity High School, where she was class treasurer for over 70 years. She had planned many of the class reunions. As a freshman, she was elected the first female vice president of a Trinity High School class 1936-37. She was a graduate of Penn Commercial College. In 1991, as a member of the Trinity High School basketball team, Katherine was inducted into the Washington-Greene County Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. She also played semi-pro basketball for the Hazel Atlas Glass Company women’s basketball team. Katherine volunteered at the Washington Hospital for over 40 years, and was a member of the Auxiliary Board where she served as an officer. Mrs. Avolia was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where she had been employed in the Rectory Office for 19 years, retiring in 1987. She belonged to Christian Mothers. During World War II, she worked at a steel plant in Lorain, Ohio, in the pipe department, while her husband served in the U.S. army in the South Pacific. Her husband, Angelo Avolia, died on October 20, 1988. Surviving are a son, David Scott Avolia; a brother, Lawrence W. Scott, of Washington; a sister, Caroline Moore, of Washington; and 4 grandchildren, Kari Johnson Borello, Amanda Johnson Pauls, Scott D. Avolia and Daniel R. Avolia. Deceased are a daughter, Elaine Johnson; and 2 brothers, George H. Scott and Donald F. Scott. Friends of Katherine Mary Avolia, 88, of Washington, who died Friday, November 19, 2010, will be received on Sunday, from 2 to 5 PM, at the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, on Monday, November 22, 2010, at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Washington Cemetery.
