James Albert Barlow, 83, of Washington, died Friday, October 22, 2010, in Donnell House, following a one-and-half year illness.
He was born June 6, 1927, in Washington, a son of Richard and Minnie Naylor Barlow.
Mr. Barlow worked in the bar mill at Jessop Steel for 40 years. He was also an owner, trainer and driver of racehorses at the Meadow Race Track for many years.
Mr. Barlow was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Claysville American Legion, L.O.O.M. 22, VFW 927, and the Jessop Club. He served 12 years on Trinity Area School District School Board and formerly coached midget football.
He was active in the Wounded Warriors program and enjoyed traveling with the Steelers Football Club for many years. At the age of 65, Mr. Barlow experienced skydiving for the first time.
He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, children and grandchildren.
Mr. Barlow was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He served in the Navy from November 24, 1944, until his honorable discharge on August 21, 1946, with a rank of Signalman, second class. For his service, he was awarded the Pacific Theater Ribbon with one star, American Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory Medal. On January 11, 1950, Mr. Barlow was called from inactive duty to once again serve his country. He served aboard the USS Antietam and was honorably discharged on August 20, 1951, with a rank of Construction Mechanic, second class.
On February 19, 1949, he married Peggy Lee Reilly, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Danny James (Theresa) Barlow of Midwest City, Oklahoma; two daughters, Jamie Lee Wolfe and Lori Ann (James) Miller, both of Washington; a sister, Margaret Ann (Shorty) Grudi of Washington; six grandchildren, James W. Steuernagel, Shawn J. (Kelly) Miller, Monica L. Miller, Shane P. (Nikki) Barlow, Danielle M. (Adam) Cloud, and Tiffany (Jeff) Prem; five great-grandchildren, Reilly J. Steuernagel, Sam J. Cloud, Kenzi J. Miller, Sara Hathaway and Noah Hathaway; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are a brother, Richard Barlow, Jr., and a sister, Doris Barlow Camp.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 27th, with Pastor Harry Ankrom officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175. The Loyal Order of Moose will hold memorial services Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. in the funeral home.
