Milton Marquis, 91, of Hickory, died at 10:55 p.m., Wednesday, August 8, 2007, in Donnell House, following a two-week illness.
He was born December 5, 1915, in Hickory, a son of James Myers and Dora Maude Patterson Marquis.
A graduate of Hickory High School, he later served in the Army, during World War II, with the 713th Signal Automatic Weapons Company, receiving the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory Ribbon and an Honorable Discharge on July 6, 1946.
He was a Communications Specialist/Wireman with Columbia Gas for forty years and a member of Columbia Gas Quarter Century Club.
Mr. Marquis was a member of Hickory United Presbyterian Church and the Mt Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed various handy man projects and all local sports.
On December 23, 1940, he married Thelma I. Frye Marquis, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Thomas Milton Marquis, II, of Palestine, WV, James (Fran) Patterson Marquis, of Avella; a daughter, Patricia Jean (Robert) Newberry, of Bland, VA, five grandchildren, Jeffrey Marquis Newberry, Robert Stewart Newberry, Nathan James Marquis, Katelyn Rebecca Marquis, and Marci Shore; and eight great grandchildren.
Deceased are two brothers, James Alvin and John Loyal Marquis; and a sister, Dora Hazel Henderson.
Friends will be received 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, where services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 12, 2007, with the Rev. R. Douglas Reinard officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Prospect Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to a charity of the donor’s choice.
