Charles Thomas “Tom” Clutter, 81, of Prosperity, died Tuesday, July 7, 2009, in his residence.
He was born November 25, 1927, in Washington, a son of Lloyd G. and Velma Higgins Clutter.
During World War II, Mr. Clutter served in the Merchant Marines
and then in the Army, where he was trained as Medical Technician. After medical training, he served aboard a hospital ship, the USS Comfort, in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and was honorably discharged on September 28, 1947. On October 29, 1950, Mr. Clutter was re-called to active duty and served at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, until his second honorable discharge on March 7, 1951.
Mr. Clutter worked in heating and air conditioning at Sears for fifty years and at one time worked at Hazel Atlas Glass Factory.
He was a member Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion and of Upper Ten Mile United Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a Trustee and was instrumental in building the church’s first addition.
Always concerned with community affairs, Mr. Clutter was a charter member of Morris Township Volunteer Fire Department and helped build the first ball field in Prosperity at what is now known as Morris Township Park.
He enjoyed country music, flea markets, reading history and being outdoors and camping at Big Bear Lake with his grandchildren.
On October 12, 1947, he married Marjorie McLaughlin, who survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Vickie (Ronald) Ritchie, of Prosperity; a brother, Lloyd G. Clutter, Jr, of Washington; two sisters, Midge Randazzo, of Washington, and Marilyn Hutter, of Youngstown, Ohio; three grandchildren, J. Brandon Ritchie, J. Bryant Ritchie, and Kaitlin Leigh Clutter; and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Clutter.
Deceased are two sons, John Bruce Clutter and Thomas Bradley Clutter; and two brothers, Donald and Robert Clutter.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 395 E. Maiden Street, Washington, where a service will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 10, 2009, with Pastor Larry Deemer officiating. Burial will follow in Prosperity Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.
