Washington homemaker was avid golfer. Fern E. Heatley, 90, of Washington, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009, in Washington Hospital. She was born October 4, 1918, in Washington, a daughter of William and Pearl Taylor DeVore. Mrs. Heatley was a homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was an avid golfer and formerly played dartball with her husband for BPOE. Mrs. Heatley was a member of Broad Street Baptist Church. On October 15, 1938, she married William "Bud" Heatley, who died May 25, 2007. Surviving are a daughter, Karen Sue (James) Palfreyman of Washington; a daughter-in-law, Dale Heatley of Chantilly, Va.; a brother, Dane DeVore of Washington; a sister, Lois June Hickman of Washington; nine grandchildren, Scott, Michael and Brian Palfreyman, Kristin Smith, Jeff Heatley, Terri Foley, Debbie Brock and Douglas and Mark Heatley; and 13 great-grandchildren. Deceased are a son, William George Heatley Jr.; two sisters, Rose Ray and Frieda Lewis; and a brother, William DeVore Jr. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 16, with Pastor Jay Fruitenberg officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery.
