Carl A. Sten, 91, of Washington, died Wednesday, September 9, 2009, in Washington Hospital.
He was born April 3, 1918, in Washington, a son of Carl Albin and Lilly Elizabeth Johanson Sten.
Mr. Sten attended Trinity High School and Penn Commercial Business School.
Mr. Sten served in the Army during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the European African Middle Eastern Campaign, entering on March 29, 1944. He received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal, and was honorably discharged on May 22, 1946.
Mr. Sten worked at Jessop Steel for twelve years and Washington Steel for thirty-two years, as a foreman in the shipping department, until his retirement in 1981.
He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Washington, where he was an usher and member of the Dart ball Team.
Mr. Sten was a member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.
He was active in Washington Youth Baseball for years, serving as a manager and coach, and enjoyed golfing and spending time with his grandchildren.
On June 25, 1949, he married Helen Deprosky, who died July 10, 2007.
Surviving are a son, C. Arne (Esther) Sten, of Washington; and three grandchildren, Matthew C. (Tysa) Sten, Brian A. Sten, and Natalie L. Sten.
Deceased are a brother, B. Leroy Sten, and a sister, Doris Barnhart.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Additional visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., the hour of service, Monday, September 14, 2009, in First Lutheran Church, with Rev. Dr. Kenneth Schott officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. The family requests memorial contributions to First Lutheran Church. North Franklin and Walnut Streets, Washington, PA 15301. Military rites will be accorded graveside by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.
